CHAPTER 5 The Hedgehog Concept

I found the story of the fox and the hedgehog interesting. Applying the HEDGEHOG concept to the three intersecting circles:
  • What are you deeply passionate about?
  • What (you) can be the best in the world at?
  • What drives your economic engine?
Briefly answer the above three questions as it relates to you and your school.

  2. 1. What are you deeply passionate about?

I am passionate about all children receiving a free appropriate education in a safe environment regardless of race, gender, soci-economic status and/or disability. Like the hedgehog, I understand profound insight in simplicity. What I am passionate about/believe is obtainable through two strategies: equity and equality.

    2. What (you) can be the best in the world at?

I can be the best at being myself and live a life that is purposeful. That is the single concept that unifies and guides everything I do. As far as school instruction and learning in a loving environment is what I can do :-)

    3. What drives your economic engine?

Having an insight that all children can learn is what drives my economic engine. When schools use funds appropriately and provide teachers and students with the necessary resources need it is more likely that a higher number of students experience academic success.

    1. I agree with your comments for question #2 Ms. Bolden. I think we should all live a purposeful life. Personally, I've always thought that the purpose of life is to "learn to be happy". Watching our students grow and become successful contributors to our society in some form or fashion is very rewarding. That purpose allows me to love what I do for our students each and every day!!

  3. 1. What are you deeply passionate about?
I am deeply passionate about my family and the success of my three children when it comes to life and their education. I am passionate about instilling in them a passion to learn, which I believe their mother and I have done. I want that passion for acquiring knowledge to be felt by the students at my school.

    2. What (you) can be the best in the world at?
I believe I can be the best in the world at being a father and being an example to my children when it comes to learning. I am currently toward the end of earning my doctoral degree in Advanced Educational Leadership, and I want my children to see me walk at graduation and hold that degree, because I want them to see that, despite what the world throws at you and how politics can get in the way of your dreams at times, hard work DOES actually pay off.

    3. What drives your economic engine?
Students should drive the economic engine in a school setting. More precisely, student success. Any truly successful school has successful students.

    1. I agree Mr. Burkett, children should be a vital component for driving our economic engine. Providing and filling the needs of our students should be at the helm of our decision making as administrators today. If an investment doesn't help our children then it may not be beneficial to the school at all.

  4. As a high school student, I knew, I would be in education somehow. In high school, I was allow an opportunity to handle the elementary classroom through a club of which I was a member. From this time on, I knew, I would be an educator. I worked with children starting at a very young age. I am very passionate about the teaching and learning process. Therefore, I take what and how students and teachers are doing things in their room very seriously. I don’t think I was the very best teacher, but I rank up there with the best when it came to ensuring the best education that could be provide to my students. As it relates to me and the school where I presently work, I try to make sure that teachers have what they need in terms of needed resources, professional development, support from the administrator. In addition to this, I try to assist in reducing classroom disturbances, by handling them in a very timely manner, be it phone calls to parents, administering corporal punishment, or having a very stern talk with the student.
In being the best, I can be the best at supporting my teachers in their needs and to ensure that the needs of the students are being met. That support can come in the form of being a listening ear when needed, coaching them when one may experience a problem in trying to lay the foundation for a needed skill, counseling a student, mentoring students, or family problems from the teacher. Sometimes, our best is to help others be the best they can be by providing them with avenues for achieving success in their lives
What drives my economic engine is to implement our school’s motto, High Standards, No Excuses! My economic engine really reps up when it comes to helping students become productive members of society. As an educator, I see and know how important that our students acquire knowledge in school in order to make better scores on standardize test. From here, they go to college, military, or trade school. When students have completed their course, then into the work force to become productive members of this society. So, my driving economic engine is seeing students get what they need and go on to do really well in life and give back to community.

  5. I am deeply passionate about learning. We live in a changing world where learning can boost your confidence. In my opinion, learning gives you a real feeling of achievement. The more you learn, the more you have to share, teach, and help the community around you. Learning changes the structure of your brain and makes it more open to receiving even more information. Because I am passionate about learning, I am committed and dedicated to our school. How cool is it too learn something today that you didn't know yesterday.

Assisting others is one the things I can accomplish in the world. I can assist others in many ways and I try to use every opportunity that I can. By supporting people, we show them that we care. Giving our time and encouragement to someone will often be more valuable than even the most generous gift. There are many people who feel lonely and want to chat with others. Even those who have many friends and a loving family enjoy speaking to new people. By providing love and support, we can make a real difference in the lives of others. In relation to my job, I want to use the word customer service. In other words, good customer service is the lifeblood of any business. Good customer service is all about bringing customers (parents) back. The essence of good customer service is forming a relationship with customers (parents & students).

Our economic engine is built on lasting relationships with teachers, parents, and students who will continue to work with us over time to make sure we are providing a quality education to children. When we think about product development, we think about building new programs that will be valuable to our teachers and the education of our students over a long period of time. When we think about hiring, we think about bringing in educators who can offer great insights in educating our students.

  6. What are you deeply passionate about? At McKenzie we are deeply passionate about improving student learning; however, we understand that students do not care how much we know until they realize how much we care. To help meet this relational goal, we incorporated TigerREACH time each Wednesday during which students meet with their mentor to discuss character related topics. Our primary goal is to give our students an adult mentor throughout their high school career that they can bond with and establish a supportive relationship with.

What can you be the best in the world at? We believe we can be the best at the world at establishing relationships that are loving and supporting to our students because we are a tight-knit community and a tight-knit family. Administration and teachers who are committed body and soul to our mission at MHS make us the perfect candidates to create an environment which expects the very best from our students now and in their future endeavors.

What drives your economic engine? Our engine is not as economic as it is people driven or all about relationships. Our wealth lies within our employees and the product we produce which is students who are ready for their next phase of education or the workforce itself. We have teachers who authentically care about and invest their lives in the students of our school. We have more community support than any school I have ever been employed with…and that is a LOT. The passion of our employees ensures commitment to our students. It ensures that our students will learn in an environment that is conducive to expecting only the best when reaching for those high standards. The passion of our employees also serves as the motivator for starting with student data so that we can move our students from where they are to a higher level of performance where they think critically and can be creative at the same time.
